Once a week, we will be taking some time to get to know some of the writers here at The Homeschool Classroom. We hope this will be a way for you to learn more about the women here at The Homeschool Classroom, and maybe find someone you have some things in common with! (And, maybe you’ll want to check out their blogs too, while you’re at it!)
Our interview this week is with Kris from Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers…
Share a little about yourself and your blog, Kris…
I am a thirty-something Christian wife and homeschooling mom. I have been married to my wonderfully supportive husband, Brian since 1991 and have been homschooling my three children since 2002. My blog began simply as a personal journal of our days to help me focus and what we had accomplished, rather than what we hadn’t and it grew from there as I caught the blogging bug. ;-) Today, I hope that my blog serves as a source of support and inspiration for other homeschoolers, while offering tips, resources, ideas and a glimpse into what homeschooling looks like for one family.
What about your kids?
My “weird, unsocialized homeschoolers,” who give life to my days and a name to my blog, are: Brianna, my newly-minted teenager (13/7th grade), Josh, my only boy (8/3rd grade), and Megan, my “baby” (6-almost-7/2nd grade).
Do you use a specific approach to homeschooling or a more eclectic approach?
We are just your average, ordinary eclectic homeschoolers with a Classical bent and a little twist of Charlotte Mason.
What do you hope that your children will gain from homeschooling?
I hope they gain a confidence and a love of learning born of a home life that emphasized their strengths and encouraged their weaknesses. I hope that they will leave our home equipped for the life that God has purposed for them as Christ-centered, grounded young people who value their God and their family. And, I hope that they will carry through life strong sense of who they are without a lot of the baggage that comes from having their sense of worth defined by immature peers, but rather by a family that loves them.
Have your children exclusively been homeschooled or have they attended public or private school at some point?
My oldest was in public school for Kindergarten and first grade. The youngest two have always been homeschooled.
Why did you decide that you wanted to be a writer for The Homeschool Classroom?
I get a very strong sense of fulfillment and purpose when I can help other families discover the joys of homeschooling, as my family has. I love to be able to offer tips, ideas, encouragment, and commiseration and to share things that have worked — or haven’t worked — for my family. I want to help people see that homeschooling is much more than simply an educational choice.
I also confess to a life-long dream of being a writer, to be able to put on paper things that inspire, amuse or entertain others. I don’t know if I succeed or not, but to think that other people want to read what I’ve written is a source of personal fulfillment and affirmation to me.
Writing for The Homeschool Classroom offers a unique way to combine my love of writing and my passion for homeschooling, two things that are a very important part of who I am.
Is there anything else that you want to share to help us get to know you better?
If asked to describe me in one word, those who know me best would probably say “loyal” or “honest.” Unless, of course, you were asking my extended family. They might use the word “prude.” And, at least one friend would want you to know how uncharacteristic she thinks it is that I have two snakes for pets…but she’d be hard-pressed to describe that using only one word.
Thanks for joining our writing staff, Kris! Your article on Flat Traveling this week was fabulous and will probably inspire a whole lot of flat travelers this school year! We’re looking forward to learning more from you!

Nice to meet you Kris! Really you have three weird and unsocialized homeschoolers? I love the t-shirts, I bet you get A LOT of looks when they’re out and about in public with those on!
What a great interview, Kris! I love the name of your blog–don’t you just want sometimes say: “don’t feed the homeschoolers!–they’re wild!??? :) I love your writing style as well and I look forward to hearing more from you!!
Kris,
A shower of blessings on your posts here and on your blog!
Hugs,
Maria
Thanks, ladies. It is an absolute pleasure to be here. And, yes, Tammy, we *always* get comments when the kids wear the shirts. Even non-homeschoolers (is that a word??) think they’re hilarious.
My favorite comment was from a cashier once. She took a look at our shirts and said, “That’s funny. Do you homeschool?”
Um, no, we just liked the shirts so much that we ALL decided to buy one and wear them at the same time. ;-)
