I had intended on writing a spectacular article outlining a typical day, spelling out that we do certain activities at certain times of each day, but as our week progressed I realized that was unrealistic. You see, my kiddos speed through their school day right now. After talking with our teacher, we’re playing a wait and see game. The boys are learning, but we think that because it’s still the beginning of the year and they are doing reviews, it is taking them much less time to do their work.
I’ve laid out our subjects by day. The way our school is set up, we have to turn in samples at the end of each quarter. I think I have it figured out so that the boys will be completing the required work in the amount of time that they should.
Our schedule currently looks like this:
Monday –
o Math – watch Video
o Language Arts – handwriting and other workbook
o Daily Geography
o Technology
Tuesday –
o Math – pages A & B
o Language Arts
o Daily Geography
o Home and Family/History of our Country
o Science
Wednesday –
o Math – pages C & D
o Language Arts
o Daily Geography
o Spanish
Thursday –
o Math – pages E & F
o Language Arts
o Daily Geography
o Home and Family/History of our Country
o Science
Friday –
o Math – Test
o Language Arts
o Daily Geography
o Spanish
o Technology
The boys also have to do some sort of physical activity for PE and they also read 30 minutes – an hour every day.
This past week we added swimming to our schedule, every Monday for 90 minutes the boys go swimming. In October, they will be taking swimming lessons twice a week in addition to the Monday afternoon swim. We will also be adding Cub Scouts to our schedule. While Cub Scouts technically wouldn’t be “school”, we have found that it’s a fantastic supplement to whatever we teach them in regards to Social Studies and social skills. It gives them an opportunity to be part of a larger community and work with other people towards a goal.
A typical day in our house starts with the boys coming out of their rooms at 8am. They eat breakfast and play until 9am, when school starts. They work through the subjects for the day until they are done, then they go off to their room to read and/or play. If the sun is shining, they go outside about 3pm and play until about 5. If it’s raining or just generally icky, they get 30 minutes playing Wii Fit.
Our day, even our schedule, may not be ideal for most people, but it works for us. The kids are learning what they need to learn. They’re learning to be in charge of their own study habits. We do have to continually remind them to do some things, but for the most part when 9am rolls around the boys are sitting at the table with their pile of books for the day. We reserve the right to add and take things away depending on the boys needs.
I’m always interested in hearing about other people’s schedules. I’d love to hear about your day. Our daily schedule is another topic that I will be revisiting in the future, after we’ve added more things to it.

I too love hearing about other family’s schedules! Ours is being remodeled so I’ll try to post it when we’re into the new one!
We used to be very unscheduled.
We have a schedule for the first time and it is working wonderfully for us. We start late and work bits and pieces in all day long. In between, we fit PE (ie. go outside play), chores, dinner, and free time.
I recently posted it on my blog: http://blog.homeschooldistractions.com/2008/09/schedule-that-works.html
