Despair had descended upon me, when I checked out our very first science experiment in our homeschool classroom. I was sure that we had followed the instructions to the letter, but it just didn’t resemble what it was supposed to look like.
Perseverance! That was the key here! The key that would unlock the reason that our science experiment had gone awry and ultimately teach Genius the objective it was supposed to have taught. Yeah right. I knew that it probably wasn’t salvageable, and prayed that God could use this as a learning device anyway.
You see we were using a closed tube system, to provide a vacuum for radish seeds to obtain water, in order to observe that seeds will soak up light and water to sprout. But our seeds were not doing a thing. Nothing, nada, nyet. In desperation, while Genius was feeling distressed over it, I suggested we add more water to the test tube. So we did. And the waiting began again.
After a couple of days of intense observation, we saw the seeds starting to crack, and the sprouts emerging. Hooray! After a little tweaking, our first science experiment, while not a success, had some results.
But in the mean time, it got me thinking. We are all like those seeds. Each person has a dormant embryo soul inside them when they are born, much like the seed embryo. If we are fortunate enough, in childhood, we are partakers from family, friends and churches to be watered and given light to help us grow in the ways of Jesus. Some of us remain as dormant seeds, only hearing and sprouting as teenagers or adults.
Others of us are now the seed growers. We have children of our own that we are watering and growing towards the Son. Hopefully they too, will become nourishers as well as they spread the Sonshine around.
The point I want to make is this: Even though our science experiment of growing seeds ended up as somewhat of a dud, I want my daughter to become adept at growing life seeds. I want her to learn to water and bring light to the dormant seeds she comes across in her life. For it is through those vehicles that the seeds begin to sprout. While she may never see the seeds come to fruition herself, the acts of encouraging a dormant seed to come to life, will be a lesson never wasted.
So, let us not just grow seeds for Science, let us grow seeds for Life!
What things are you doing that help grow your children’s life seeds?

You can hang out with Tammy at Three Different Directions, where she is usually following a meme or two, since she has now handed the science experiments over to her husband to facilitate, hoping he is more successful at attaining results!

very true! I always try to teach my kids that even when things don’t go as planned we can do something good with it….
and I try to be as open and honest with them about their questions and not try to give just that “grown-up” response that’s so easy to do….
