Tell us a little about yourself and your blog…
I’m Veronica Maria. In my previous phase in life, I worked with words as a newspaper reporter, editorial assistant, copywriter, and editorial project manager.
Now, my main vocation is wife and Catholic homeschooling mother of three. Pixilated School Notes, my blog, is the online repository of my scribbled musings about this life as well as a place to put our notes from finished unit studies.
What about a little bit about your family…
My husband, Preston, and I are the parents of: Essie (age 8), Miguel (age 6), Sebastian (age 2.5) and baby Rafael in heaven. Sometimes, I daydream of more.
Do you use a specific approach to homeschooling or a more eclectic approach?
Our approach has evolved. In our first year, we were very much school-at-home with rigidly enforced hours for learning, an overkill of worksheets, etc. Through time, I learned to sift out the chaff and keep the wheat, so much of our approach translates well into all aspects of our life. The book, “Real Learning: Education in the Heart of the Home,” transformed our homeschooling lives. Now, we’re electic homeschoolers with creative tendencies.
What do you hope that your children will gain from homeschooling?
Love of Christ, love of learning, love of work, love of service. Those are the focal points of our parenting. We believe our family can better teach these in the context of homeschooling.
Have your children exclusively been homeschooled or have they attended public or private school at some point?
My children have never really attended a brick-and-mortar school. They go to some community center classes for ballet, soccer and basketball, and attend our parish for Faith Formation classes, but that’s the extent of their “class”-ness.
Why did you decide that you wanted to be a writer for The Homeschool Classroom?
I wanted to stretch out my bloggin’ wings.
Is there anything else that you want to share to help us get to know you better?
I can be quite serious. And then, you know, go to the complete other end of the spectrum. My moods don’t swing, but my thoughts are monkeys in the trees half of the time. That might be important to know about me.
