Our First Year of Homeschooling Curriculum

One of my favorite about homeschooling is checking out all the various curricula other homeschoolers are using. There’s so much out there! When you’re just starting out that fact can be overwhelming (at least, it was to me!) but it’s also exciting and it’s interesting to see what does and does not work for other homeschooling families.

This is our first year homeschooling our oldest daughter, who is in first grade. Our curricula list looks like this-

Reading/Language Arts
Little Stories for Little Folks: Catholic Phonics Readers
My Very First Catholic Speller
New American Cursive (first grade cursive writing program)

Latin
Prima Latina

Math
MCP Mathetmatics 1994 Edition Level A

Science
Easy As 1, 2, 3: A Catholic Overview of Science for the Primary Grades

History/Social Studies
The Story of the World Vol 1 (Ancient Time): text and activity book
The Usborne Internet-linked Encyclopedia of World History

Religion
Faith and Life Series: Grade 1 (text and activity book)
A Year with God: Celebrating the Liturgical Year
New Catholic Picture Bible

We also supplement with weekly library trips to get lots of “living books” to complement our studies! When I asked my daughter what her favorite subject/text was, she was torn between her math book and her Latin book.

What about you? What’s your child(ren)’s favorite subject and text book, if they have one?

Genius loves her social studies curriculum. We are using Bob Jones University Press’s World Studies.

She also enjoys the Apologia Physical Science that she is using for our homeschool co-op. We chose to purchase the textbook completely on CD-rom, and it is so neat, because they use video clips to explain science concepts or to show them experiments. She gets such a kick out of those that she watches them over again.

I’m enjoying many of the CHC materials — they are so nice and gentle! But, we are also supplementing with other things as well.

What do you think of the MCP math? We went with Horizons, based on a recommendation from Amanda.

Tammy, the physical science book sounds great, I’ll have to put that on my list of curricula to check out!

Angie, we actually really like the MCP math! I thought it might be boring for her, but she loves it. I almost didn’t buy the teacher’s manual because I thought, “well, how hard is it to teach 1st grade math?” but I’m glad I did. It has all sorts of extra things you can do, as well as tips for helping when they’re stuck on a concept, and just a good general basic description of how to teach it concisely.
