Meet Our Writers: Tammy from Three Different Directions

by Past Writers on October 9, 2008 · 4 comments · why we homeschool

Tell us a little about yourself and your blog…

My name is Tammy and I am a 34 (almost 35) mom and wife that homeschools!

What about a little bit about your family

There are just 3 of us in our family, my husband, Genius our 12 year old 7th grader and myself.

We are big, big Disney fans, and plan our vacations around Disney activities most of the time. We enjoy traveling in general, and since all of our family lives in Canada, where we are originally from, we travel north a few times a year as well.
Our favorite activity as a family is playing video games, on the computer and on our newly acquired Wii!

I enjoy scrapbooking (digital and traditional), reading and knitting as well.

Do you use a specific approach to homeschooling or a more eclectic approach?

We are using a more traditional approach at the moment, since Genius has been in the public school system up until this year. So we are following a more guided approach, using textbooks and workbooks mostly.

What do you hope that your children will gain from homeschooling?

We hope that we will be able to challenge Genius and broaden her scope of thought. We also hope that we will be able to instill in her a respect for authority and a willingness to go above and beyond what is required of her, two things we saw she has been lacking in her education so far.

Have your children exclusively been homeschooled or have they attended public or private school at some point?

Genius attended public school from Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.

Why did you decide that you wanted to be a writer for The Homeschool Classroom?

I decided I wanted to be a writer for The Homeschool Classroom, because I love to talk! We are privileged to be part of a large homeschool community where we live and worship, and are “the new kids on the block”. While even new homeschoolers can impart wisdom and ideas to the seasoned, I wanted to be able to share with other people who are perhaps even newer than we are at it, as well as have an outlet to give and receive from outside our immediate social circle.

Is there anything else that you want to share to help us get to know you better?

My husband works a different work schedule than most – Friday through Monday. Therefore we are untraditional in our schooling days. Those are the days we school as well. So we are off Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays! We use our worship at church on Sunday mornings (when Genius and I attend together) and evenings (when we attend as a family) as part of our schooling. It’s a little more unorthodox than the “regular” Monday to Friday approach, but fits our family well. We also are planning to school year round.

Hi Tammy! We’re big Disney fans, too! We’re originally from Southern California, so a trip home always means a trip to Disneyland. My grandparents only live 30 mins away. Last year my inlaws took us on a Disney Cruise and we’re going to Disneyworld for the first time next month! We’re so glad that homeschooling allows us the flexibility to take our vacations at off-peak times.
