As a child I always got excited when we started seeing the back-to-school advertisements towards the end of summer. I loved getting new supplies… crayons, pencils, erasers, markers, notebook paper… all the necessities that came with preparing for school. As I have gotten older that hasn’t changed. However, now I get excited not only for the back-to-school supplies but for the books I can buy for the kids, the manipulatives, the arts and crafts and all that I deem necessary for our homeschool year.
One of the wonderful things about homeschooling is that while we get to buy things at the beginning of the year we are not held to using all that we buy. We can decide to use something else to help teach a lesson or idea. We are not “stuck” with certain curriculum because that is what the school is telling us to use. We have the opportunity to tinker with our lesson plans, to abandon some things and pick up others. The beauty of homeschooling is that we make the decisions.
One day while I was searching online for curriculum I ran across a website that had me so excited. Rainbow Resource is an amazing website! Not only can you order school books (think lessons) you can order general reading books, arts and crafts items, manipulatives, toys, holiday items, planning journals, grade books… you name it, they probably have it! In fact they have over 40,000 items you can order! Talk about a teacher’s dream come true!
While you can place your order online you also can request a catalog from them as well. This way you can peruse at your own pace. You don’t have to make quick decisions, you can highlight and make a wishlist. You can compare their prices and check out all their merchandise. The day my catalog came in the mail I thought I died and went to teacher heaven! Nothing could prepare me for the 3 inch thick book of delight that I found waiting in my mailbox! The kids couldn’t understand why I was grinning from ear to ear.
I am not reviewing this site because they asked me to, I am reviewing it here because I thought that perhaps those who had not heard about the site could benefit as much from it as I have. It’s always wonderful when you find a site that you can have confidence in and be excited about. It’s even better when you can share it with others.
What sites have you found to be particularly amazing for your homeschooling journey?
When Michelle is not buried deep in her Rainbow Resource Center catalog she can be found blogging about her life and homeschool journey at Pass The Flu Bug Please.
