It’s been about 2 months since we last talked about Extra Curricular Activities for your family. Most of us are in the swing of school now, and have added them into our lives, so I thought this would be a good time to talk about them again. :)
To refresh your memory…. For the past 3 years our family did Cub Scouts, Awanas, and 4H. We moved to Alaska in May and have had to re-vamp our activities based on schedules and what is or isn’t available.
This year we have 2 boys in Cub Scouts, which means meetings 2 different nights a week. We also are doing swim lessons (after school sports!!), and one day a week we go to “school swim” at our local pool.
Swim lessons conflicted with Awanas this year. As much as we need to do Awanas, we decided it was more important for the boys to learn how to swim. Swim lessons are offered all year long, so we’re taking advantage of that opportunity.
Sadly, there was no 4H group up here. When I contacted the State Office, the response back was “Well, Mrs. XXXXX, we are looking for someone to get the club up and running if you’re interested”. Umm, no. As much as I love the organization, I just don’t have it in me to take on a task that monumental . So, 4H is on the back burner and we will revisit adding it to our schedule once we’re in a location with a group (or 6!).
It is really difficult living in a really small area. Most small towns are within driving distances from a bigger town with more opportunities. My family lives on an island. There is 18 miles of paved road. The only way on or off the island is via ferry or airplane. While trips can be great learning experiences, we just don’t have the funds to pack up and go somewhere.
Our local library does offer story time, but it’s for the preschool/toddler crowd. We are part of a homeshcool group here, but there haven’t been any get togethers or activities since school started.
Tell me, dear readers, now that school is in swing for you, what extra curriculars have you added to your school day? If you live in a small area, how do you find extra curricular activities?

We have done 4-H for the last 4 years, and we go to the gym for our PE. There are other homeschoolers who attend as well.
We used to attend a co-op, but took this year off. We also have children’s choir and RAs at church, and of course their are the “play dates” with friends.
That keeps us pretty busy.
We have 4 kids age 7 and under with #5 on the way. This is the first year we have had a second vehicle so we could do any extras, as dear friends GAVE us an old car. We have our 7yo in ballet on Saturdays, and she has an American Girl Book Club/Co-op one Thursday a month. That’s it. We are strengthening some friendships with other homeschool families that have children close to the ages of our kids by getting together as families or for a playdate every few weeks. That’s it!
We have AWANAs on Wednesday night. Thursday is Boys' Writing Club. We attend Nature Club at the library once a month on Saturdays. Also once a month on Wednesdays, our HOUSE group meets for an activity meeting, and the kids are doing a play with this group so we have rehearsal 3-4 times a month. We also are involved in our co-op each Tuesday.
My kids are 5 & 7.
