As you are all reading this post, I have a confession to make….I’m somewhere in Disney World right now! And next Thursday….well….I’ll be in the middle of the Caribbean. Okay, okay I shall taunt you no longer, instead I’ll give you some hints on how you can take your own vacation, without even leaving your home!
Change Your Weather! We generally take our vacations in winter, and as you read above, to a tropical destination, mostly because we live in the Northern Plains, which means that it’s cold here in December!! Do you live in a cold climate too? Pull out the shorts, tank-tops, flip flops and bathing suits. If your budget allows, turn your heat up for a couple of hours, spread your beach towels on the living room floor, and pretend you are at the beach! (Little umbrellas in the lemonade help with that!) Do you live in a warm climate, and have the desire to hit a ski resort? Then do the opposite, pull out the parkas and mittens, make some hot chocolate, and let your imaginations do the rest!
Visit the Destination Virtually. If you can’t go there for real, a tv screen can help. Our library has many travel dvds available for loan. Find a destination you have always wanted to visit. Not only will you get a thrifty vacation, you get prime spots at the best tourist attractions, and the kids might learn something too.
Eat, Eat, Eat! Did you decide to go to Mexico? Eat tacos. Did your children want to visit the Leaning Tower of Pisa? Then I think spaghetti for dinner is in order! Skiing in the Swiss Alps? Maybe you could have Swiss cheese and chocolate (not together though! eww…). You get the idea.
Less Chores, More Fun. While many families camp, and find it enjoyable, we’re more hotel kind of people. Our favorite joke to tell people is “Our idea of camping is the Holiday Inn”, lol! So when we’re on vacation we visit a lot of restaurants. You don’t have to eat out, but to make the day last longer and be more fun, use disposable plates and utensils, it’s almost as good as eating out, when there are no dishes to wash for anyone! Also let the kids skip making their beds for one day (you too!), because that’s one of the perks of going on vacation.
Take Lots of Pictures. We need to have memories of all our vacations right? So years down the road, we can remember the fun we had. At home vacations are no exception. Charge up the batteries, make sure the memory card is empty, and start clicking.
Unplug. Part of the reason we go on vacation is to get away from what keeps us routinely busy through the days, to relax, to “get away from it all”. A vacation at home is no different. If you are able, unplug the phones and stay away from the computers.
Have you ever taken a vacation at home? Did you take one while I was gone? If you did, come back here and comment I would love to read about it.
Tammy’s blog Three Different Directions, is on vacation too! But come back in the middle of December and visit her to see pictures of her Disney World and Disney Cruise vacation.

I love your ideas! It’s fun to go somewhere without really going anywhere sometimes. I do have to admit though, I’m insanely jealous that you are in Disney! :)
