The Little Man in the Map

With all of this traveling I’m doing the past couple of weeks, I have an itch for geography. I love learning about new places.

I grew up in Canada, and so personally I have trouble remembering the locations of the States on a map, especially on the East Coast. 10 provinces and 3 territories (there were only 2 territories when I was in school!) are much easier to remember! But thanks to the TOS Homeschool Crew, I was able to acquire this cute book, that just might make it easier for me to recall which state goes where.

The Little Man In the Map (With Clues to Remember All 50 States), is a delightful book to help reinforce the location and names of the states. Written by E. Andrew Martonyi and illustrated by Ed Olson, this book has been nominated for and won various awards.

Laid out in a rhyming pattern, it starts out by introducing MIM, the little elf man behind it all! Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Alabama and Louisiana, make up Mim, and he helps us remember all the other states!

The illustrations are charming, and to be fair, while some of the descriptions may be a little far fetched as to the shape of the state….if you read it enough times, I think you will really see correlation to the map and the ability of your children to find and name the states if they have trouble with them.

The book costs $19.95 and there is a wall map that you could use along with it that sells for $21.95. Or if you buy both together you could save some money and purchase the bundle for $35.00.

Visit Schoolside Press where you can download some coloring sheets, based on illustrations from the book. There is another book in the works for children to learn the state capitols using Mim and other memory tools, it looks mighty promising!
