Working on Sight Words

What is a sight word?

A sight word is one that is typically a high frequency word. It is one that most readers can read without needing to decode them (sound them out).

How can I encourage learning sight words?

* Read aloud often! Since many sight words are high frequency words, they will come up often in reading. (You can point to words as you read.)

* Put up a word wall, if you have a classroom area

* Makes games with flash cards that have sight words on them

* Sight word bingo

* Play hangman with sight words

* If working on handwriting, use sight words in your lessons

What are examples of sight words?
