Working your schedule when the schedule gets thrown off…

I love my husband. He’s a wonderful husband, fantastic father, and my biggest cheerleader on this homeschooling journey. But I hate when he has a day off (or a heaven forbid a WEEK off!) during the school year. When he’s home on a day that we have school it throws us all for a loop.

We do school at the kitchen table. The kitchen is right next to the living room. I will admit, I have the TV on during school time. I watch home decorating shows. It’s one of my vices. The boys glance, but for the most part they can tune it out. But when dad’s home it’s another story.

Ideally, when dad’s home we’d take that as an opportunity to do school outside. Or dad would teach them something that mom can’t That doesn’t always happen in our house. Dad does his thing, the boys sit and stare at whatever dad’s doing. Reminding them about school usually results in whining. I’ll admit, I do give into the whining, but the consequences usually are double the work the next day.

In the grand scheme of things, the book work isn’t important. The book work can wait. The memories that they are creating with dad matters. I have to keep reminding myself of that. School really can wait. Just because they’re not sitting at the table with their books doesn’t mean they’re not learning. DS#1 is a walking calculator, as he watches his dad play a video game he’ll rattle off how many points dad needs to win. DS#2 is a sponge, soaking up facts as the Mythbusters debunk the latest myth.

As I started writing I had planned on asking you how you dealt with the interruptions of your school schedules, if you were strict with things being done when they were supposed to be done. But once my brain and my fingers started connecting I realized that it’s just me who’s getting thrown for a loop. It’s funny how things work out like that. Please, if you do have interruptions that do throw you or your schedule off, how do you deal with it? Do you make up for it later? Do you let it slide? Or do you just let it roll off your back?
