Christmas break has come and is almost over. Monday morning, 9am will find us sitting around the dining room table, noses to the grindstone.
We follow the same schedule as our local school district. We take our breaks when they do, we start school when they do. And, just like families that don’t homeschool, we have to adjust our internal clocks and be ready for school. My kids whine and fuss when they are expected to get back into the school groove and things don’t run smoothly for a few days.
I, personally, enjoy the break. Especially when dad is home. I have slept in until 9am on more days this Christmas break than I have since becoming a parent 10 years ago. We have had lots of late night movie nights or game nights.
Even though we’re not sitting at the table with our workbooks, the learning never stops. The boys received Legos to build, encouraging math and science skills. They have worked on life skills and helped keep the house running smoothly. They have played in the snow and gone sledding, working on their physical education. We played board games, encouraging reading and problem solving.
Tell me, did you take a break this year? Was it a long break? Was it a short break? Are you dreading going “back to school” when your break is over?

We took a LOONNGGG break and I’m dreading ONE MORE day without a firm schedule and concrete things for the kids to do and tasks to accomplish!
Seriously, the bickering. The fighting. The begging for more computer time… GO DO YOUR MATH!
LOL
We start Monday with a brand new science unit study – the Human Body- and I can’t wait!
Ask me in two weeks. LOL.
It never fails the moms I speak with who do not homeschool either believe that we teach every day rigorously at the table or that we goof off all the time. We do have a set schedule too.
