This month, The Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science (COPUS) kicked off Year of Science 2009 (YoS2009) — a national, yearlong, grassroots celebration.
From their website: Science helps satisfy the natural curiosity with which we are all born: why is the sky blue, how did the leopard get its spots, what is a solar eclipse? Science can lead to technological advances, as well as helping us learn about enormously important and useful topics, such as our health, the environment, and natural hazards.
You need to check out the Year of Science website. Every month there will new content on there, and since January begins the year, I can not even imagine all the resources that will be on there within the next 11 months. January’s theme is “Process and Nature of Science”. (As a disclaimer, February’s theme is “Celebrating Evolution”, while I do not know what the content will be during that month, I thought it should be mentioned.)
I know that Kris’s article awhile back on her family’s Flat Adventures was a hit. Well the Year of Science has some Flat Stanley Science Adventures to view!
There is a Fun Zone – complete with videos of science comedians and a scientific pizza contest.
While every topic presented this year, may not be useful or appropriate for your homeschool, I have found that even when I don’t entirely agree with the views of the scientific community due to aspects of my faith, there are often “gems” of information that I can still use for my teaching in some areas of those websites I’ve visited. For that reason, I encourage you to bookmark and visit the site in the coming months, and peruse it for information and fun that you may be able to integrate into your teaching!
Tammy’s blog is located at Three Different Directions. She has many reviews of different products there. She is also known to be having a giveaway on occasion! Click the “review” link at the top to find them.
