With all the talk about the economy, people being laid off and losing their jobs, things like job searching, cover letters and resumes are being updated and revised in homes all across the country.
But did you know it is important for our children to have resumes too? What exactly is a resume anyway? Well in simple terms a resume is a selling tool that outlines your skills and experiences so an employer or administrator can see, how you can contribute to their organization.
Kris Manley recognized the need to start our children off young in resume building. She authored the book Resumes for Children - 17 Years Old and Under.
With 21 sample resumes, covering a variety of topics and interests, there is sure to be one (or more!) that your children relate to. There is one specifically written by a homeschooled student’s point of view. Ideas for references and cover letters are also included in this book. There is plenty of space for students to write their reflections, ideas and resources in the back of it as well. Also included is a page with “Pearls of Wisdom” to help your child explore some ideas.
Of course as an adult I recognize the importance of having an effective resume and or cover letter to sell yourself as the best candidate for the opening. I wanted to see what Genius thought of it though, so after having her read through the book here is what this almost 13 year old thought of it:
“I learned from this book, that it’s important to track awards you’ve won, things you’ve done, and jobs you’ve taken. From what I’ve learned, I believe that I will start keeping my own resume, or at least just keeping track of things like that. This book is great because it show kids you can already start recording information of things you’ve achieved and prepare yourself for the future, when it is very important to write a good resume.”
I think this is a great resource for a parent to have for their child, especially for those students about to apply for their first job, or for college. A well written resume, detailing even just volunteer positions could land your child the position they are looking at, because the employer or administrator can easily see how accomplished they are through their documentations. I also think it will challenge students to look at a larger picture of their talents and where they can take them in the future.
