Given Barb’s post on Saturday I thought I would share a poem my husband gave to me years ago. It is a framed poem called the Teacher’s Prayer. It doesn’t list an author (and my efforts to identify the author have not been fruitful) but I think we can all identify with it. It has helped me when I wonder if I am doing the right thing with and for my children and if we are proceeding down the right path.
Teacher’s Prayer
I want to teach my students how
To live this life on earth
To face its struggles and its strife
And to improve their worth.
Not just the lesson in a book
Or how the rivers flow
But, how to chose the proper path
Wherever they may go.
To understand eternal truth
And know right from wrong
And gather all the beauty of
A flower and a song.
For if I help the world to grow
In wisdom and in grace
Then I shall feel that I have won
And I have filled my place.
So I ask your guidance God
That I may do my part
For character and confidence
And happiness of heart.

What a wonderful poem! I will have to print it and put it where I can see it every day. It is so true. Thanks for sharing it!
