I’m sure some of you looked at the title of this post and said, “What the heck?” The first time I had ever heard of KWL I was in school studying to be a teacher. I thought it was one of the greatest teaching tools I had learned about. I still feel that way!

So what is KWL?
KWL is a way for our kids get more from what they are studying. It’s a study aid and a tremendous helper! KWL stands for “Know” “Want to Know” “Learned“.
To use this helper you separate a page into three sections. At the top you write K W L :

As you beginning talking about your topic have your child write down everything he knows about the subject under the “K“…
Next, have him write down everything he wants to know under the “W“…

Finally, when you are done discussing the topic have your child write all that he learned under the “L“…

Using a KWL can help your child in several ways. It can help them see what they have accomplished with their studies. It can help them study and remember facts easier. It can also help them stay organized, especially if they need to write a report on the subject.

The KWL method is a wonderful learning aid and teaching tool. It can be used with just about any subject. If your child is having a hard time recalling what they either already know or what they’ve learned this is a great way to help them out! It can be used in all grades and you might find that you can use it as well!

I was just remembering KWL this week. I also learned about it in early childhood education courses and was thinking of ways to use the chart with my daughter.

Neat, I’ve never heard of that! I’ll file that away for the future :)
