Now that I’ve got nearly a year of homeschooling under my belt, I thought I’d list my favorite things about homeschooling so far. This first year has gone much more smoothly than I anticipated, in all honesty!
- Not having to get up at 6:30AM. When she was attending Catholic school, that’s what time we had to get up to make the 20 minute drive. Neither of us are morning people. At all. Being able to take the morning easy is good for all of us. We usually don’t start school until after lunch most days.
- Having the freedom to make our schedule around our lives instead of a school. Especially with my husband working third shift. It makes finding family time so much easier, plus I don’t have to get a big headache over things like scheduling doctor’s appointments and vacations.
- Flexibility in learning. A couple weeks ago we were taking about plants for our science topic, but she was also interested in earth quakes. So we checked out both topics! For me, my natural curiosity was constantly squashed in school because of time and curriculum constraints, and that’s something I never wanted for my own children.
- Having time to work through problems and topics she doesn’t understand. Having only one student means that if she’s struggling or gets an answer wrong, we can keep working at it until she really gets it, instead of pushing her through to keep up with “the class.” And nothing seeing her excitement when something really clicks! I’m so glad I get to witness that.

I also love the flexbility we have with what we study and how we school! (Oh, and I *love* not having to wake up so early!)
