The Sisters in Time books are a good way to learn about American history.
I think kids ages 8-12 (primarily girls) will enjoy these books very much. The issues brought up are great and suitable for further discussion and research. The books are written from a Christian perspective as well, which gives them an added dimension for discussion.
I read two of these books. Elise the Actress takes place during the climax of the Civil War. This is an interesting story about one young girl’s view of events in 1865. It has many inspiring points. In summary, it is not overly long (141 pages) and not difficult to read.
1931 and The Great Depression somehow no longer seem like such out of touch history. Anna’s Fight for Hope, which is set during this time period, may strike a chord of relation with your children, in light of the current economy. Superior writing explains The Depression in words suitable for 8-12 year olds. Young boys should enjoy this book as well since a lot of the book focuses on Anna’s cousin Fred and the friendship he strikes up with a homeless teen.
Actual historical content blended in with fictional characters makes for excellent reading for kids, and good educational learning. There are 24 titles in the Sisters In Time series, so you could find one for just about any era of American history that you are learning about.
