Alexander, the Red Horse with Green Stripes (by Harold Littledale) is the story (that may not even be in print anymore) about a boy who regales his dad with stories of all Alexander’s bad behavior that day. At the end, we discover that perhaps Alexander wasn’t the only one who had a bad day.

I Wanna Iguana (by Karen Kaufman Orloff) is a new favorite in which the main character exchanges a series of letters with his mom, campaigning to bring home the iguana of a friend who is moving away.

The Pinkerton books (by Stephen Kellogg). We don’t care which one; we love them all! Pinkerton is a lovable Great Dane who can’t seem to stay completely out of trouble, but whose behavior always turns out not to be so bad after all.
Officer Buckle and Gloria (by Peggy Rathmann) is the adorable story of extremely safety-concious Officer Buckle and his not-quite-so-serious police dog Gloria. I can promise you that after you read this book you won’t forget that you should “never stand on a swivel chair.”
Those are just a few of our favorites. What are some of yours?
Kris is the sweet-tea-drinking, classically eclectic, slightly Charlotte Mason, homeschooling mom to her three Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers.

We’re big Dr. Seuss fans, here (especially my 3.5 year old!) My 7 year old is really taken with Junie B, and reads them to herself a lot (with some coaxing from me, she thought she wasn’t old enough to read chapter books for some reason!) She also considers anything about dinosaurs to be “just for fun” books, so she has an encyclopedia of dinosaurs she has me read to her from a lot.
We have some ethnic food based board books with titles like My First Book of Sushi, Let’s Nosh, and A Little Bit of Soul Food that the little ones really like.
