I had really been wanting to learn how to knit, so my husband and kids were nice enough to let me pick out a few things from Amazon.com for my birthday in December.
One thing I got was The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Knitting that people were just raving about. (That’s also when I got the fabulous Stitch-It Kit that helped me learn to embroider for the first time.)
My kids are still too young to seriously work through some of these kits, but I realized while working on them how perfect they would be for homeschoolers studying the domestic arts! They would be great for someone like myself — the Mom who wants to be able to teach those skills to her kids one day, but didn’t know how to do them either.
Now, I must admit — I haven’t opened that knitting DVD yet. But, after months of having a set of Knifty Knitter looms that I had picked up hoping to
have an easier way to experience knitting, I finally grabbed them out the other day and set out to make a hat.
Wow! This is definitely a project that older elementary students (and above) could tackle! Imagine the pleasure your child will feel when, after just an hour or two, they can have a completely finished project.
I sure know that it was a thrill for me! Oh, and my daughter that had been begging for months for me to make her a hat with the loom set? She
was pretty darn happy too!
Have you ever used a kit to teach a concept that you are not familiar with, especially one in the domestic arts? Did you and your child enjoy it?

My daughter has been using a loom on and off since she was about 6, they really are very easy to use, it’s just like french knitting with more pins.
She’s recently started making small pouch/ purses to sell, which has boosted her self confidence as well as giving her a way to save up towards a Nintendo :)
I soooooooooooo want to make a hat! Was this an easy/med/hard task to finish?
The loom looks neat! I have no sewing/knitting ability but my daughter (5) is smitten with the idea of sewing and the like. This sounds like a neat item to add to our homeschooling.
