Ideas From My School Room

Here are some things that work for us. Maybe they will work for you too!

1. I’m a big believer of bringing the outdoors inside. Nature is a huge part of our everyday lives, even inside our home and school room. Here we have a shell collection, pine cones from California, geodes that we opened, a display of owl pellets that we dissected, various rocks, and a painted turtle shell in a piece of pottery from Monticello, next to our nature journals. These collections make us smile. What makes you smile?

2. A basket filled with goodies to remind us of our last summer vacation. There is powdered ink, inkwell and quills, metal toy soldiers and canon, replica dollars, an American revolution card game, clay marbles, famous men of the Civil war fandex, brochures from smithsonians etc. When there is down time, we can reminisce about our family vacation. (I also have a basket in our dining room from our St. Augustine trip).

3. Time saver! I use this for my pre-k, soon to be Kindergartner. Since we do FIAR, unit studies, lapbooks, read lots of living books and play with lots of hands on games. Its nice to have everything laid out for me so I don’t have to hunt it all down. This would be especially helpful for unit study moms.

4. Lazy susan to the rescue. We keep everything within arms reach, because I can’t stand getting up and down from the table. Here is a list of what is packed on this lazy susan from IKEA:
  • crayons
  • markers
  • colored pencils
  • regular pencils
  • pens
  • highlighters
  • scissors
  • glue stick
  • ruler/meter stick that’s fold able
  • tape
  • stapler
  • electronic thesaurus
  • electronic dictionaries
  • latin vocab cards for each child
  • magnifying lenses (we use these a lot)
5. If you have pre-k or elementary aged children that you need to occupy while you are working with the older ones you might like this. We have an easily accessible tape/headsets for 3 children and tons of books on tape. Keep a few mini chairs or bean bags handy and you’re good to occupy several children for the time being.
6. Storing Art in a portfolio-
A safe place to keep art work and it makes a nice portfolio that keeps it all together for you. Great for oversized paper too!

You need:
Posterboard paper (different color per child)
Stapler
Marker/Stickers
To make:
Simply fold the posterboard paper in half to make a pocket. Staple both sides shut. Write the child’s name on the portfolio and let them decorate with stickers if he is younger.

Organisation! I’m still horrible at it LOL … I love the nature-indoors stuff! I suspect our cats would never leave anything that smelled of ‘outside’ alone though :-P

I made a great, big poster board pocket to store the laminated maps for areas that we aren’t currently studying.
