While looking through some of the comments regarding what you, the readers, wish to read about, I came across a few comments regarding homeschooling high schoolers. I also read that several of you think a question and answer period would be nice too. I decided to combine these two topics and asked my oldest daughter if she’d be willing to help me out with a post for the site.
My daughter Kaylie is 16 years old, finishing her 2nd year of high school and is looking forward to her junior year next year. She has only gone to “regular school” for one year and that was many years ago for first grade (at a private religious school). She did attend a preK class and was in kindergarten for about 2 months before we pulled her out and homeschooled her the rest of her school year. She went to first grade while I finished my senior year in college for my teaching degree.
Recently we gave her the option of finishing her remaining school years at a traditional public school or continuing to homeschool. She first said she wanted to go to school but then changed her mind and decided to homeschool. The choice was completely hers to make and we were going to support her whichever way she decided to go. Honestly, I was happy with her decision to homeschool!
For high school we have done a couple of learning methods. We have taught using various texts books and lesson plans based on
Georgia’s Quality Core Curriculum as well as she was enrolled in an online accredited high school called
Seton (a Catholic high school based in Virginia teaching all subjects but included a Catholic religious background as well). We haven’t decided what we will use next year but are leaning more toward leaving Seton and continuing on our own and basing lessons on the Georgia QCCs.
Kaylie has agreed to answer your questions regarding homeschooling as a high schooler. She is willing to give you her insights on what it is like to grow up a homeschooling child, how she has handled socialization and what she has liked and disliked about homeschooling through the years. If you have other topics you’d like to ask about she’d be happy to answer those questions too.
If you will leave your questions in the comments section we will post the answers to them next Sunday. She is looking forward to sharing all she can about her experiences with homeschooling. I’m curious to read her answers as well! It will help me every bit as much as you since we have so many others who will be one day moving up to the high school level. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions about her earlier experiences with grade school and middle school. She can help give insights to those levels as well.
We look forward to your questions and comments!

I would love to know what helped her to make the decision to continue to Homeschool instead of going to "regular school"?
Do you have a co-op or group like that for your age group?
Thanks so much, Kaylie, for doing this – looking forward to your answers!!!
This is a great topic, because teaching your own, and going thru high school as a homeschooled teen can be a bit scary. High school usually prompts folks to not continue due to the "unknowns"-but to all of you contemplating it-Keep on keeping on. It can be some of the most rewarding and wonderful times you will share with your child(ren). I have 2 graduates under my belt, one beginning her Sophomore year and one early ed. student. I wouldn't trade those years with my kiddos for anything. And contrary to popular belief-home schooled kids can and do relate very, very well to the "real" world.
I look forward to reading the questions for your daughter. Blessings-
Kaylie – I don't have a question, but an encouragement. I had the same option as a high school student, and I made the same decision. Many years later I can say I have never once regretted that decision. You made a very wise choice, and I believe you'll be rewarded for it. I'm praying that there will be many who ask you questions and that your answers will encourage and strengthen them greatly.
What did you like the most about homeschooling? The least? What would you have changed, if anything?
Thank you for questions and comments so far! We are writing them down and look forward to answering them!
