Curriculum Review: New American Cursive

When I was preparing for our first year of homechooling (1st grade), cursive didn’t even cross my mind. Since the public schools generally don’t teach it until 3rd grade, I just didn’t think of it. But as the start of our year drew nearer, my daughter expressed a strong interest in learning cursive. So I poked around on the internet and found New American Cursive, a program created specifically for 1st graders!

NAM is basically a simplified introductory cursive that removes many unnecessary strokes to make learning cursive easier for younger children. The book is spiral-bound at the top, making it easy for left and right handers both to use. There is a little meerkat “teacher” and pages for artwork to keep it fun for the little ones. We were very laid back with it (we only did one or two pages a week) and my daughter still learned the basics of cursive. Overall we were very pleased with it, and I would recommend it for anyone interested in starting a younger child with cursive!
