We’ve started a family art night once a week and it has been a huge hit. The kids look forward to it every week and it gives us something creative to do with each other while having fun. I’d like to encourage you to pick a night to dedicate something creative you can all do together (even Dad). Turn the tv off, walk away from the computers, clean up the kitchen after dinner and spend some creative time together! Sharing in creativity builds family unity and memories.
The things we have enjoyed doing so far are:
- Still life pictures – set up by you or, pick a child to arrange something on the table
- Portraits of each other
- Collages – cutting magazines up and gluing them down
- Abstract art with various art materials
We also have “sister’s night” where I get to spend time with my little girl and Dad gets the boys for “manly time” and, of course, movie night! That way we know how our week looks, we are spending time together, Dad is involved in the evenings, I’m not off on the computer and the kids have things to look forward to. Leave a comment and let me know what kinds of things you do together in the evenings. I’d love to hear about them!

My family have game nights where we turn off all electronics, including cell phones, and we enjoy classic games like Operation, Monopoly, Mouse Trap, etc. If it's a nice night we will go outside with our board games. And of course, we occasionally have movie nights. My favorite one-on-one thing to do with my son is basically cooking night, where he basically takes over cooking dinner, with me as the sous chef! Then our family favorite together time is our hiking days, where we all get in the car, dog and all, and drive out to go hiking for the day.
We really enjoy family night. In fact, my 8 year old daughter even wrote about it on my blog a couple months back. In the winter, we do movie or game nights. During the summer months, we take bike rides after dinner or play games in the backyard.
Friday nights are Family nights in our house. Usually the board games come out and we make homemade pizzas or sometimes its a family game of soccer after dinner in the backyard. whatever it is our kids REALLY look forward to it…and so do we. I think it teaches our kids that the family is more important than other distractions in life and its important to put aside a special time to celebrate that.
That is the most important thing we could ever teach our children, Donna! So true!
Love the family art night!!!
