Q & A: What holidays and other special days do you study/celebrate during the homeschool year?

by Angie on June 16, 2009 · 6 comments · holidays and celebrations, question and answer

As I am getting ready to plan for next school year (in what is hopefully a more organized way than I did last year), I am looking toward being able to put in more activities for various saint’s feast days in our calendar.

It made me think — what are some holidays/special days that you make sure to include in your homeschooling year to study/have parties for/do a special activity about?

It can be something like Valentine’s Day or it can be something like National Donut Day. We just want to hear what some of those days are!

Angie can be found writing at Many Little Blessings, when she isn’t busy writing this post while her family really should be getting ready for Vacation Bible School.

We generally like to celebrate most holidays, but the ones that we took some time to study were: Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Memorial Day, President's Day, and for Earth Day we incorporated a lesson on 'Green Living' into science. For Halloween we did touch a little bit on the origins of that particular holiday.

We love holidays! It's always easy to find craft activities!

We do: Valentine's, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

We celebrate all the holidays and just added Michaelmas, and Martinmas. Next year I hope to get to do May Day, we didn't get around to it this year.

I have a book called Every Day a Holiday by Silvana Clark. It gives tons of great ideas! One of our favorites is National Clashing Clothes Day, the 4th Thur. in January. We have a family competition. We post pics on the blog and let people vote. National Pie Day is Jan. 23rd, so this year the loser got a pie in the face.

April Fool's Day! My mom started it and it has become a tradition… have a weird breakfast/dinner, dress backwards or inside out and find jokes and tricks to play before noon :)
