Great Games for Learning Flexibility

Have you heard of the card game Fluxx?

This is a great game to teach flexible thinking – our family has loved it for years. It’s as simple as a box of cards, and the basic rule of “draw a card, play a card.”

From there, the individual cards can change the flow of play – the rules of the game are constantly in fluxx. You can play a rule card that says “Draw 2″ and then everyone draws two cards and plays one. If the next player lays down “Play 4,” the next player draws two and plays four. There are also action cards that let you search through the deck, pass your hand, remove rule cards, and make all kinds of other changes. There are also “keeper” cards – green cards like “Cookies” or “Peace” that you play in front of you to keep – and pink “goal” cards that tell you, at that moment in time, what cards you need on the table to win. (“Cookies and Milk” is always a favorite!)

Really, the game is that easy to explain. The rest of the rules and changes are all written on the cards. The game is fun and light but also helps cultivate the ability to think on your feet and follow a constantly changing set of rules. Those are great thinking skills for kids, and the folks at Looney Labs recognize that. They even have a page on their website called The Looney Academy which includes Lesson Plans and Standards Correlations for several of their games – including different versions of Fluxx including Spanish Fluxx and Eco Fluxx, which play in the same way as standard Fluxx but with new and different cards.

For even more fun, try themed Fluxx games including Monty Python Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx or the brand-new Martian Fluxx – or for younger kids, try the slightly easier reading level of Family Fluxx.

All the games help with reading fluency and thinking skills, but our family loves them because they’re just plain fun.

Our family has been lucky enough to review two of the newest games from Looney Labs – Martian Fluxx and the re-release of Aquarius. If your family is interested in these games, please head on over to Mind Games to check them out!

Between “Cookies and Milk” and “Love, Not War,” PisecoMom uses board games to homeschool her two kids over at Mind Games.
