What Games Do You Play on Thanksgiving?

Since both of my kids are still very young – my son is 7 and my daughter is 3 – our homeschooling year takes a big turn in mid-November, when we take lots of time for seasonal and holiday books, projects, and games, of course.

Every board game has some learning value for kids – before my husband and I were even married I used to talk about how wonderful it would be to have games at the base of our homeschool. Taking turns, being a graceful winner (or loser), planning ahead, and making the best of what you have are all great life skills.

We’re heading out of town today to spend Thanksgiving with my family, and we packed a bag of board games to take with us. That’s another great advantage to games: because they’re so much fun, we all learn together with glee.

Here’s what’s in my little bag for the weekend:

Apples to Apples, Linkity and Funglish are all word games of the sort that use words already on cards – a little more level playing field between by 7-year-old son and his English-teaching poet Aunt. Quartiles is a mathematical take on dominoes, which is a game I have lots of memories of playing with my dad. We had a request to bring a Munchkin game, which is a parody of role-playing games – but still involves lots of math as you calculate strengths and defenses and levels.

So these cover language and math in ways that are entertaining enough to be enjoyed by the whole family – and the turkey and pies will cover home ec!

Does your family play any special games on Thanksgiving? I’d love to hear about your traditions!

Between pies, Alexa homeschools her kids with a curriculum heavy in board games at Mind Games.

We played Apples to Apples for the first time on Thanksgiving! It was great fun and a good game for all ages. Tonight we played CatchPhrase w/ some friends and Taboo is always a family favorite along w/ Uno and Phase 10.
