I wish I had more answers then I have questions when it comes to homeschooling a child through the high school years. I’m doing a lot of research as we prepare to have a highschooler next year and I wanted to share what I have learned this past week.
There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of guidance from other homeschool moms when it comes to homeschooling through highschool. The advice gets hazy. It makes me a little uneasy as I prepare for next year. So, I thought that I would share what we are learning for those that are coming up behind, or along side of us.
My three concerns are that my child will have enough of the right credits to enter a college or university, have a high enough SAT/ACT score, and have the right kind of credits to apply for financial scholarships.
Here are the things that I have found helpful so far.
SAT Practice
Your highschooler can sign up for daily SAT practice questions sent to his email. He can also take free SAT mini-tests to practice the questions so that when the time comes he will feel confident in taking the test.
I’ve also purchased the Official SAT Study Guide for us to start going through next year.
High School Diploma Requirements
From my research I have found that the requirements to earn a high school diploma are not the same as being eligible to receive financial scholarships. This is assuming your child scores a high enough score on the SAT and has a high enough GPA to apply for the scholarships. You can search for your state at Diploma Guide, but I have found that doing an internet search with your state and the words “highschool diploma requirements” will bring more detailed information to you.
Scholarships
I searched with my state’s department of education, and became familiar with the scholarships that were available.
If you happen to live in FL, FACTS.org is a great site for you and your child to look around to understand the credits, scholarships, testing and other information necessary to get ready for graduation.
Another good site is FinAid. This is a free site that searches for all the available scholarships. Many other sites will want to charge a fee, but not FinAid.

Great post, thank you! Just so you know though… I tried to go to the links for the SAT practice questions, and mini tests, and they don’t work. No complaints, though… excellent post!
In case anyone is interested. I came across a resource for finding out a ton of information about writing transcripts for high school homeschoolers, and preparing homeschoolers for college scholarships. Here are a couple of websites which will lead you to tons of info on the subjects… http://www.thehomescholar.com/easy-truth.php
