Each year during my childhood, we spent our spring break cleaning.  It’s funny –  now when I think back on it -  It was a week long chore fest, but I felt so good at the end of that week.

My mother would put names of rooms on strips of paper and we would draw, from a container, which room we would conquer that day.  Each of my siblings begged for their room to be first.  We would all work together rearranging furniture and cleaning out closets, dresser drawers, toy boxes and shelves. Every inch of every space in our home would be cleaned spotless.  We would get rid of the worn out, grown out of, and no longer loved items we had collected over time.

I just love that feeling of fresh clean organization. Don’t you?

Maybe it’s the sweet smelling spring breeze that drifts through those newly opened windows, or the soft sunny rays beaming throughout the rooms that makes me realize how dreary and stuffy our home has become while it’s been closed up tight for the winter.  Whatever the reason, with spring comes this urge  to revitalize, shake off the old and start fresh.

I feel this in our homeschooling too.  The need to change things up a bit, rearrange and try something new.

I’ve rededicated our afternoons to outdoor time. We’ve been cooped up too long and need to breathe some fresh air and feel the sun on our faces.

We’ve turned our studies to anything Spring  related – insects, frogs, weather, seeds and plant life (gardening of course) and it feels good.

We are rearranging some of our schooling supplies and also our schooling schedule.  We are trying a basics block in the morning and then a rotating schedule later in the day.  So far we are all really happy with it.

What are you doing to satisfy those feelings brought about by this wonderful thing called Spring?

I like the idea of tackling a room a day – We recently moved, and that is how we got the house ready – we all wanted to live in our newly refreshed house! I think I’ll add a room a week on the calendar for rainy days through spring.

We too have spent as many sunshine hours outdoors as possible. In the Pacific North West many people get sad or depressed from the lack of real blue sky and sunshine, but each day, there does seem to be a sun break, and we take it.

We also re-organized the school storage room by purchasing the tax type file boxes found in stores right now, each person has a plastic box with the hinged lid and handle with storage in the top for pencils and such. We can do math or english on the go, or in any room. :)

I’m happy to be able to play outside again, too! We don’t go through much of a winter in southern California, but there have been many rainy days. Love it when we can get back outside!

We have started to clean the front porch. Have recovered the seat on the bench, planting and just making it very welcoming! Next, clean all of the windows!
