In the March/April 2010 Scouting Magazine, there was an article titled “Why hooking up with the homeschooled can boost your pack.” Here’s some of what they had to say:
- “The fastest growing school meets at the kitchen table.”
- “Homeschool families can make a great addition to many packs because they’re child-focused, contain involved parents, and often share many of Cub Scouting’s core values.”
We think it’s a win/win situation for both sides. Cub Scouts can be awesome for your boys.
This week we are having a blast at Cub Scout Day Camp. The boys have made new friends and met up with friends they haven’t seen since last year. The Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs are a place where homeschoolers can really shine.
Cub Scouts earn badges for all sorts of great things. We like to add some of these to our course of study. Here is a sample of some of the belt loops they can earn.
So far this week at Day Camp, we have learned to orient a map and use a compass, bake brownies in a cardboard box, learn about decomposition and wildlife conservation. We’ve built a birdhouse, shot BB guns and bows and arrows. And there is much more to come!
We’ve also found a turtle, a huge snake skin and a crayfish during our free time and this was only in the first two days!
As if Day Camp isn’t enough fun! - There are tons of other things to do through Scouting!
From the Scouting Website:
Some of the best things about Cub Scouting are the activities you get to do: camping, hiking, racing model cars, going on field trips, or doing projects that help your hometown and the people who live there. Cub Scouting means “doing.”

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts have always been an essential part of our homeschooling. I wrote an article for The Old Schoolhouse magazine a few years ago about Homeschooling and American Heritage Girls, and I also talked some about Cub Scouts there. The article can be downloaded as a PDF file here: http://ahgonline.org/pages/page.asp?page_id=19336
It’s about 10 articles down.

Yes. American Heritage Girls is Christian scouting for girls. GSUSA opted out of this long ago. You can read all about AHG at their national website at ahgonline.org.

My husband is the cubmaster of our Christian Homeschool Pack. We are hoping to add a Boy Scout Troop soon, since my oldest ds is one. The parents are great because they are used to planning and being involved.

We LOVE Cub Scouts. One thing I will say, though. Your experience will vary greatly depending on the Pack you choose to join. Unless you already know all about one Pack and are happy with what you know, visit a couple before deciding which one to join. We tried out two before we found our current Pack. We were also told by another that their Pack was just for kids in “their school.” The Pack we found is organized and structured, but tons of fun. They are active and involved in EVERYTHING! We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the opportunities it has provided for our boys. In fact, our 9yo is at Webelos Camp (with Grandma) – Yup, Cub Scouts is something your WHOLE family can be involved in!

I really wish we could find a girl scout troop that was more like the cub/boy scouts. They always look like they’re having so much fun and learning so much, too! It really does vary widely from group to group, but the girl scouts we’ve met seem to just be interested in cookies and attending sporting events in their cute little scout outfits. My daughters would much rather be camping, hiking, and looking for animals. We haven’t given up though, so we’re still on the hunt for a group that fits our needs.

I understand how you feel. The Cub Scout and Boy Scout programs are really fun and challenging. I would have preferred that myself. I really enjoy working on Cub Scout requirements with my son; and Day Camp was a blast! I hope you can find a group to suite you. ☺
