Last summer there was a fire in a nearby townhouse and we had to evacuate to a neighbor’s home in the middle of the night. The townhouse was gutted and for a short time afterward, we panicked anytime a smoke alarm went off. We had long discussions about fire safety at the time, but have not revisited the topic much since then.
A few weeks ago we discussed fire safety and went over some of the basics again. We discussed 9-1-1 and when to dial it. We talked about how to get out of our house in the event of a fire. We even practiced stopping, dropping, and rolling.
I was even able to find some interactive websites for the kids to visit to help solidify the things that we had discussed. We were also able to tie in some outdoor fire safety as well.
