A Few Things about Homeschooling

by Past Writers on September 30, 2010 · 13 comments · motherhood, why we homeschool

As I sit down at my desk to write something that will inspire, provoke highly intellectual thoughts, and just plain wow the masses, I realize that the kids have taken this time to run free, to cause chaos and discontent. They are literally running through the house chasing each other with a dishtowel. I really don’t want to leave my chair and see what exactly has caused this chaos or even see what other damage has been done throughout my freshly cleaned home.
Have you been there?

This post is dedicated to any newcomers to the homeschooling scene and is dedicated to all the veterans who have lived through difficult times yet emerged unscathed with a few memories to boot.
I don’t know whether this post will inspire, cause intellectual thoughts, or even wow the masses but it is truth that happens in every homeschooling home at some point during their experiences. Grab a cup of coffee and get settled in because today we are all going to relearn what we didn’t expect from homeschooling.

These are all the things that you should be aware of when you make the decision to homeschool.

• Books will collect in every nook and cranny around your home.
• Paper will collect in every available place it can. (used or unused)
• Science Experiments will start taking place in the oddest of places.
• The moldy leftovers from dinner two weeks ago will become one of those fascinating experiments.
• Fingernails will be saved because they need to be studied in depth.
• If you have animals they will become part of the school day and the little ones will not be able to do any school work without said animal.
• Every experience will become a learning opportunity.
• The youngest child in the family will be able to do a very complicated math problem beyond their years, yet won’t be able to read.
• Calendars are for more than important dates and appointments, they are one of the most useful tools available.
• Recycling was a chore but has now become a perfected art form in your household.
• A bloody nose becomes a collected sample among many others.
• Who knew a family could have such a heated debate over scat found in the front yard, left by some unknown creature during the night?
• The kids will actually beg to go to the library.
• Your husband may make comments like, “Have you seen the rest of my toothbrush?”
• Your husband may also ask “Why are there teeth marks in the butter?”
• The living room and the kitchen will be the most used rooms in the house.
• Expect the unexpected!

Homeschooling becomes a part of everyday life that so quickly becomes hard to separate. The choice is not for everyone and everyday will bring a new challenge.
Is everyday easy? Absolutely not and why should it be? Many days might find you a frazzled mess that would love nothing better than to run screaming from the house but all the great things that happen in between those days make it all worth every frustrating moment.
Keep your chins up, the first year is always the hardest, as every family member adjusts to life.

This had me laughing so hard I almost fell out of my chair! The comments from your husband were pretty hilarious too. Sounds like a fun household!

I love this. And you bring up for me one of the greatest reasons to homeschool: “Every experience will become a learning opportunity.”

That is what it’s all about.

Great post! I could completely relate to so many of your points. I loved the one about the family pet needing to be nearby for schoolwork to be completed. My kids are 13, 12, and 9 and even now, SOMEBODY always has the dog snuggled up to them when they are doing their independent work.

P.S. – Mine still chase each other with dishrags sometimes!

Great post, not only for new-comers but to veterans, too. Sometimes I need a little reassurance that I’m not alone.

I loved this! Our cat became a regular part of homeschooling. He was in all of the pictures, even in the intro of my son’s science experiment he submitted to Currclick last year.
