Great Homeschooling Links – September 17, 2010

Boxes, Boxes, Boxes

Playing with boxes can really bring creativity out of children.  Let them loose with an assortment of boxes (cardboard boxes, cereal boxes, shoe boxes, oatmeal boxes, cardboard tubes, or any other box-type material you can collect) and a few other supplies such as glue, tape, scissors, and items that can be glued on to embellish–and you never know what wonders they will bestow upon you!  Here are a few links to give you some ideas or just let them craft their own:

Creative fun with boxes  -  The Boxdoodle Project
Here are some interesting ways to “re-create” a box.  NOTE:  You have to scroll sideways on this site.

Mini Truck Box Template  -  Pioneer Thinking
This looks like a great gift box as well as toy!  Print it from your own computer using card stock.

Whirligig in a Box  -  Thinking Fountain
Combine a shoe box with a wire hanger and a couple other materials and you get a fun mechanical toy!  Fun for boys AND girls!

Cardboard-Box Oven  -  MarthaStewart.com
Cute, inexpensive play oven for the cooks in the family.

Mystery Box  -  Disney Family Fun
Need and idea for a a fun fall fund-raising event?  Or use it when you are introducing a new lesson.

Marble-Run Toy  -  Inhabitots
This will capture their attention for a while!  Cardboard tubes could also be used to create a similar toy.

Bug Hotel  -  Disney Family Fun
Fall is a great time to still catch bugs.  Go on a nature walk and collect a few in this cool observatory.

Cardboard Car  -  Boowa & Kwala
Remember these when you were a kid? This can also be modified by cutting the bottom flaps off so the child can “walk” with it.

Cardboard Desk  -  Howcast on You Tube
Your children can have fun anywhere with a desk like this!  You could even make a smaller lap-version for use in a car.
