There are many things I find myself thankful for, especially as the year comes to an end and a new one begins. We look back in awe in all we have accomplished and look ahead at what’s still to come.
I want my daughters to realize that being thankful is more than rejoicing about a special toy that they received for the holidays. I want them to learn that being thankful is what gets us through each year.
Every holiday dinner before we pray, our family goes around the table, and each person briefly states what they are thankful.
This year went something like this:
- 11 years of marriage
- health
- good friends who are on your side
- my new barbie and my dog
- loving parents
- a new bundle of joy!
My goal for my family is to remember what we are thankful in our daily activities. To help my family do this I created a “thankful jar.” We decorated an old canning jar and filled it with slips of paper of things we are thankful for, but an action is also included.
Here are some examples of what’s in our thankful jar:
- I am thankful for my cousins, write a letter telling them.
- I am thankful for my eyes, go on a nature hike.
- I am thankful for my hands, make something yummy in the kitchen.
- I am thankful for my dogs, take them for a walk.
- I am thankful for my parents, give them a surprise visit.
- I am thankful for my sister, help her with her chores.
- I am thankful for my legs, go on a bike ride.
- I am thankful for my grandparents, draw a picture for them.
- I am thankful for my house, help mom clean.
- I am thankful for my dad, pack his lunch.
Each day we pick one piece of paper from our “thankful jar.” My hope is that these simple reminders will carry us through the year with a thankful heart and spirit.
