Christmas Gifts Made by Homeschoolers

One of the things that I really love to give for the holidays are handmade gifts.  It just feels like it is giving something extra special of oneself when you give handmade.  Of course, this isn’t to say that my kids aren’t mostly getting games and toys for Christmas, but I like to give handmade when I can.  When I don’t have the time or the particular talent to give a certain something handmade, I love to be able to give gifts that I have bought from local stores and small, owner operated businesses.

Today, I wanted to highlight some great gift ideas that are all made by homeschoolers.  Buying from other homeschoolers is a great way to support the homeschooling community!

Get Your Hands on Learning! features some of the best tutorials and projects from the Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers blog, updated, expanded, and organized in handy, at-your-fingertips eBook form. (This is a great gift for your favorite homeschooling friend, or for yourself!) Featuring 11 projects with how-to steps, including full-color photos, dozens of game ideas, printable resources, and an extensive list of versatile hands-on activities to enhance any study, Get Your Hands on Learning! will show you how to painlessly include active learning with whatever curriculum you may be using so that your kids can start learning through doing.

Waldorf inspired doll from The Handmaden

Kelly from The Handmaden is passionate about crafting handmade dolls, hand dyeing,  natural materials and embroidery. She really loves color!  She has been homeschooling for over 5 years and has 4 children aged 10,
5, 3 and 17months.

Cara from Cara Jouglard Photography offers nature and New Orleans photographs that would make a beautiful addition to someone’s home.  She also offers gift certificates that can be used for photography sessions, digital packages, and prints, if you happen to have someone on your Christmas list in her area.

Snowflake Earrings from Lacy Treasures

Darlene from Lacy Treasures describers herself as a homeschooling “old timer” having started homeschooling in 1992.  (She has homeschooled all four of her children for their entire schooling.)  Darlene and her daughters make hand tatted lace jewelry, accessories and home decor.

Custom Mother's Necklace from Ocean Breeze Design

Not only has Linda homeschooled her children for 7 years  (ages 12, 10, 8 and 4), but she also runs two Etsy shops. She has Ocean Breeze Design, which contains sterling silver, Swarovski crystal and Czech glass beaded jewelry.  Linda also has Ocean Breeze, which contains jewelry that is silver plated to keep costs down for single income families, like so many homeschoolers are.  Linda is especially excited about her newest product – Mother’s bracelets and necklaces.

Doll Sling from Little Monkey Pouches

Angela from Little Monkey Pouches (handmade items for children and adults) and Barn Kitchen (handmade items for the kitchen) lives on a hobby Farm in west TN where they raise Katahdin Sheep, her son breeds labradors, daughters raise rabbits, also, hens (eggs), meat chickens, turkeys and vegetables that they sell locally. They hope to become as self sustaining as possible.

Handspun Wool Yarn from A Spinner's Tale

Jen from A Spinner’s Tale is a homeschooling Mom of three who is a spinner and crocheter. She spins all her yarns on either a drop spindle or a unique old antique handmade wheel that she found on Ebay about two years ago. She also makes handmade felted soaps, beaded cell phone charms from her handspun yarns, and other crocheted gifts.

Nursing Bracelet from Organic Mama's Shop

Shannon is another busy homeschooler (of three years) who has two Etsy shops! One is Organic Mama’s Shop, which features hand knit items for kids and adults as well as Nursing Necklaces and Nursing Bracelets to help keep track of what time and on which side you last nursed (also for tracking glasses of water or time meds were taken).  Grand Valley Fiber is an attempt to feed her self-described wool addiction.  She has a large variety of soft and chunky Merino Wools to choose from!

Mixed Media Painting from Just a Tiny Owl

The last of our featured homeschoolers today is Angie, founder of The Homeschool Classroom. Angie has an ebook called Finding Educational Activities in the Most Unexpected Places which is available at her blog, Many Little Blessings.  (Homeschool Classroom reader can use the coupon code HSC50 for 50% off the purchase price through December 15, 2010.)  Angie also has an Etsy shop called Just a Tiny Owl which currently features mixed media paintings and prints, some typography art, prayer art prints, TTV photography, and one lovable monster.

Disclosure: The Homeschool Classroom did not receive compensation from any of the shops listed in this guide.  All were listed were free and for the benefit of the homeschool community.

Angie, thanks so much for featuring handmade by homeschoolers and our tatted lace snowflake earrings. Thanks, too, for encouraging all of us as we strive to educate our children. What a blessing!
