Making Family Worship Time Part of Your Day

I’ve heard it a million times. (I’ve even thought it a million times!)

We can’t have Family Worship Time because Daddy isn’t here.

Sometimes it is because Daddy works late, or he works odd hours, or he just doesn’t seem to find the time to do Family Worship Time. No matter what the reason is, I have the answer…

Make Family Worship Time part of the homeschool day!

Before you moan and groan and tell me you really don’t need one more thing added to your plate, let me give you a taste of just how rewarding this can be.

Family Worship Time doesn’t have to be fancy. We’ve done anything from a Pots -n- Pans praise band to Bible Quizzing. You do not need to prepare a sermon, have 5 hymns picked out, and have each child recite a memory verse for Family Worship Time to truly be worship. It is about the Who, not the what.

Family Worship Time teaches much. One thing our Family Worship time teaches is the art of sitting still. Every child needs to learn to sit still for a certain amount of time. This is a self-control issue that should be made age/maturity level appropriate. Worship Time also teaches that worshiping God is important and not just something we give lip service to. We can say we are homeschooling for God’s glory, but our children need to see that lived out in our daily lives.

Bible Time IS Family Worship Time. If you have a regular Bible time with your children, then you are already worshiping by reading the Word, Praying, digging deeper, etc. Again, you don’t need a sermon to be having church.

Family Worship Time can inspire Daddy. If you create a Worship Time within the homeschool day and do it in a loving manner, you will often find the children are quite excited to tell Daddy about it. This excitement may be all Daddy needs to encourage him to take over this time and make it a priority in the evenings when he can be a part of the fun.

So, I encourage you to gather up the kiddos and worship the Lord! No need for perfection, just sincerity.

Great post! This is one of my 3 in 30 goals. I’ve been struggling with it, but this gives me some good ideas. Thank you!

I read an article a while back that spoke about a mother who went to stay with her daughter after she had her third or fourth child. She was there for a week to help out. While there, she observed her daughter spending time daily at the kitchen table doing devotions. The children did not bother their mother for the 30 minutes she read her Bible. The mother said in the article that she had done the same thing when her own daughter was young.

I think anything you can do, even reading one Bible story aloud to your children, praying with them and modeling your own Bible reading in front of them is so beneficial. Worship happens when we focus our hearts and attention on the Lord– and you are right, that needs to happen even without Daddy. Then our children will learn to make their own spiritual growth not reliant on someone else leading them, but through their own practice.

Great post!!!

Great post! We definitely make it part of our day. The kids and I do Bible Study Fellowship together. We get “homework” for each day of the week. This year we are studying Isaiah, and it really tag teams with our Ancient History! (I was soo excited to learn about how Cyrus the great was anointed by God! Isaiah 45:13 — prophesied 150 years before!)
Part of the program includes memorizing scripture, too!
Our challenge is not to make Bible Study something to “check off” our list….

Thank you so much for this post! At our house, it’s just my husband and I at the moment (and a beloved dog!), but your words remind me that, even when he’s at the office and I’m home alone writing, a morning worship time is still just as special when it’s God and me, alone, together.
