Six Chapter Books To Read

by Past Writers on February 9, 2011 · 8 comments · elementary school, media, reading

My five year old daughter loves for me to read chapter books to her before bed. We read a chapter or two a night and she always begs for more. Here is a list of six great reads that are sure to please your elementary aged child.

These are big books for a younger child, but we learn new words along the way, and imagine a different time and place.

1.   Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

2.   The Little House On The Praire series by Laura Ingalls Wilder
(Note from editor: The linked set is not the complete set, but the illustrations in this set are lovely.)

3.   Usborne Illustrated Stories from Dickens

4.   Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson

5.   Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

6.   Anne of Green Gables boxed set by L.M. Montgomery
We are still working on this series and we can easily get lost for an hour reading them together.

We write new words down with their definition on index cards, and keep them in a folder. By the end of a book, we may have learned thirty new words.  Now that is what reading is all about!

All the books you listed are books that I plan to start reading to my daughter this spring when we do our Spring Book Challenge here at home. I can’t wait to open her world to books beyond the standard picture books! (Which I do love too!)

We haven’t read these yet. I’m going to add The Boxcar Children and The Littles to your list. Those are classics and my daughter loves them!

I would love to read these to my 5.5 dd. We read everynight she prefers to read herself (yay) and will choose which book she will read. When I pull out a chapter book I get “nooooo, I dont want to read a chapter book….” humpf. Hopefully, soon she will change her mind.

A much shorter classic is Raggedy Ann. We are on to Raggedy Andy now!

For older elementary-aged students, any of Marguerite Henry’s books are great! In fact, you can arrange a trip to the original Beebe farm in Chincoteague, Virginia, the setting of the Newbery-winning “Misty of Chincoteague.”
