I am a big fan of Good Housekeeping Magazine and every month, they ask some celebrity or another, “When did you feel like you’d earned the Good Housekeeping Seal?”
For those of you who don’t know, the Good Housekeeping Seal is basically a guarantee from the magazine on some product saying that if it is junk, they’ll return your money. As far as I know, a product has to survive some pretty rigorous testing to get this seal. I admit, if one brand has “The Seal” and another doesn’t, I’m going with the GH approved brand.
When the magazine poses this question to a celebrity, the said famous person will answer with a quick blurb relating to some success with home or family.
This month, instead of waxing on about homeschool, I thought I’d ask you a question. You might not be a celebrity, but I’m very interested in your answers. At some point, every homeschool mom has one of those moments that makes it all worth it. I’d love to hear yours.
When did you feel like you’d earned the Good Homeschooler Seal?
Was it when your little one figured out a problem on her own for the first time?
When your high schooler defended her faith in a conversation?
When you were snuggling in bed reading and your sweet one smiled and said, “I’m so glad I’m homeschooled!”
Share your proud homeschool mama moment!

Last year was our first as homeschoolers. I was a working mom until we moved overseas in 2009, and had decided that home schooling was the right thing for us as ex-pats. Our curriculum in our first year was a bit of a hodge-podge, and almost by accident, I picked up Genevieve Foster’s World of Christopher Columbus and Sons as the history text for my older son.
After studying all about the early Renaissance, we took our first big vacation on this side of the Pond – to Italy! There, we had the most marvelous tour of the Uffizi Museum in Florence. Our guide really brought together how art, culture and faith worked together to bring about the period’s changes. He mezmerized my son, who stayed glued to the guide’s side for the entire tour, asking pertinent questions and making observations.
By tour’s end, the guide was completely impressed, and gushed to us about how marvelous our son had been, and how he was such a bright child who was really going places. If we’d ever had doubts about our homeschooling choice, they were erased in that instance. And since I’m an American mama homeschooling in the Middle East who got her affirmation moment in Europe, I guess I can call it an International Good Homeschool Seal of Approval!

That is awesome, congrats!
My oldest just found out that of her three entries in a university-sponsored creative writing contest, ALL THREE placed–she took first and second place in two categories and also received one honorable mention. I’m pretty proud of that, as this is the kid I was SURE would NEVER learn to read OR write! lol! :)

I’d like to count scholarships and awards, but I think the GH seal came in a painful way. Contrary to the shiny apples out there, my kids are human beings and mess up. Sometimes their mess ups are BIG. A brave friend came and told me something very painful that #1 son had done. The GH moment came when I had to confront him. He admitted the wrong doing, expressed remorse, asked for forgiveness. This show of character was an upside down seal for me.
I don’t feel like I’ve earned a seal, but every day I am so thankful that we homeschool. It is so great to watch my daughter learn.

There are so many moments. I love that the living books approach we’ve taken (rather than text books) have given my daughter an ability to think outside of the box. She knows that many questions have more than one right answer no matter what the teacher or teacher’s guide says. Way to think, Sprite!

My first [we haven't been doing this long] was when my 6YO realized she’s happy in the mornings now instead of being cranky. She had to get out of bed at 6:30a to go to public school. With homeschool she can sleep until she’s ready to get up. Took her about 6-8 weeks to work through the sleep deprivation, but even she noticed how much happier she was every morning.
