My Hostess® Memories (and Some New Memories to Be Made – Plus a $100 Giveaway)

My favorite Hostess treat, just waiting to be picked apart and eaten

One type of treat my siblings and I all really loved growing up were the different types of Hostess® snacks. Even just seeing things like Hostess® Cherry Pies®, Suzy-Q’s®, and Hostess® CupCakes® make me smile and think of sitting around our octagonal kitchen table, working on our treats in a very particular way.

Yes, I have to admit that’s the thing I actually think of most when I see Hostess® snacks. In fact, the first time I saw someone just take a bite out of a Hostess® CupCake®, it was kind of disconcerting. I couldn’t help but think, “Oh no; you’re eating that wrong. Don’t you know that you need to completely pull it apart before you eat it?” I guess we were into the “deconstructed” food thing before it was all fancy, pulling off the icing on the cupcake and eating it first, then breaking it open to eat the cream, and finally eating the cake.

It now makes me realize my Mom was surely a saint to not stop us from pulling all those snacks apart, as my kids do it now and it can sometimes be a bit on the messy side. But I try not to fuss too much about it because I know that’s just the right way to eat them.

Hostess® recently launched two new products to their offerings- New Chocolate Crème Twinkies® (a moist sponge cake outside with an indulgent chocolaty crème filling on the inside) and New Frosted Devil’s Food Donettes® (a moist devil’s food cake dipped in a delicious chocolate-flavored coating).

Since Donettes® are a special breakfast treat for my kids that we have once every few months, we were really excited to get to try out the New Frosted Devil’s Food Donettes®. It was actually the first time any of my kids had tried the frosted variety of the Donettes®, since we usually get the powdered sugar ones. My kids and my husband all enjoyed the New Frosted Devil’s Food Donettes®, and at least one of the four of them (probably the only one who didn’t need to ask permission) finished them off within a couple of days. While the kids all agreed they still love the Powered Sugar Donettes® the best (those things are insanely good), the New Frosted Devil’s Food Donettes® got a thumbs up from everyone.

A few weeks after we tried the New Frosted Devil’s Food Donettes®, we were able to try the New Chocolate Crème Twinkies®. (As a matter of fact, we even received a box of them shipped right to the house. Incidentally, receiving a box of Twinkies® in our mailbox made us all laugh.)

One of the things we all noticed as we opened the box was the strong, chocolaty smell. It was easy to get volunteers to try out the Chocolate Crème Twinkies®, given that initial aroma. We found that the Chocolate Crème Twinkies® had a lot of cream inside (which we were excited about). While we still prefer traditional Twinkies®, the Chocolate Crème Twinkies® would likely be a big hit for those who seek out a strong chocolaty flavor.

You can learn more about the new products on the Hostess® Facebook page.

I remember my brother always getting Twinkies in his lunchbox but I never did (he was skinny, me not so much). It’s the memory of wanting those Twinkies so badly that tortured me as a child. LOL.

The cupcakes are yummy, but my favorite as a kid was the ho-hos. My mom would pack them in our lunches every day! I can remember going with my mom to the hostess outlet to pick out our favorite snacks. I too pulled my food apart. The ho-hos were always fun because they came in that spiral like form. I ate one layer at a time. Do they even still make the ho-hos? I may have just dated myself ;)

I remember my mom sending me a package of hostess cakes my first year of college for my birthday cake. I invited a few friends to have them with me on my birthday. It made the day extra special when I found out that one of my friends had been having a rotten day and my inviting them to my “birthday party” helped improve the day.

When you typed that line… oh, no you’re eating it wrong, I KNEW just what you meant. Of course you separate the icing! But if you were doing it perfectly right, you would eat the chocolate around the white swirl and save that part for last. Mmmmm. Love me some hostess cupcakes!

Hostess treats were not something we had very often, so they were a real treat whenever we had them. Ho Hos are one of my favorites. We would unroll them before eating them. Delicious!

One of my favorite memories was watching my kids eat Twinkies for the first time and with my parents, who have recently passed away. About one month before my mom died, we had learned that the cancer was terminal and still, on her hospital bed, she was able to enjoy Twinkies with everyone around her. She loved the simple things. Thanks for the giveaway!

You’re absolutely right, you CAN’T eat a Cupcake without taking it apart. lol Cream licked out, then cake, then chocolate frosting, THEN the white braid. My favorite Hostess memory is hiding the box in the freezer. My brother thought the *box* was the serving size and if I didn’t hide it, I wouldn’t get any. He never looked behind the frozen vegetables. I finally told him about it after I moved out. He never knew!

I was never actually allowed Twinkies growing up. My dad thought they were inappropriate. BUT, I was allowed cupcakes and Ho Ho’s! My favorites are definitely the Ho Ho’s. If the deli had them, my dad would let me get one as a snack. It was amazing that there were more than one in a package. You could stretch them out forever. And by that, I mean you could wolf one down warm, one after the icing had been cooling to perfection in the fridge, and so forth.

I have two favorite memories….the first is absolutely loving the Hostesss snowballs but I rarely ate them in front of anyone because apparently they are the Lima beans of the Hostess treat world! That was ok because I totally deconstructed them and the sight of the puffy weird pink goo by itself was less than ahhh worthy. Once I passed from that addiction I never went back for some reason and now I am part of the masses, deconstructing the original cupcake when Im feeling particularily nostalgic. Now for the second….
When I was 23 and in gradschool I was working as a waitress to make ends meet. Even fast food was a luxury so my galpals from the Sportsbar where I worked pooled their tips and made me an awesome Twinkie cake! ( and Twinkies are perfect for that because even it if takes 2 weeks to eat a whole pile of them, they NEVER get stale. ) I dont want to know why. I dont want to know.

A favorite memory I have was going grocery shopping with my mom as a child and we’d always buy a package of hostess treats to enjoy on the way home! Simple but so fun

My dad and I used to get up really early in the morning and sit out on the deck with our morning Hostess treats. Cupcakes were our favorite but donuts and twinkies were there too.

It started with hostess treats in my lunchbox for school and for the rest of my life, I’ve never been able to resist those little chocolate donuts. Thanks a lot, Mom!

I have fond memories or getting hostess snacks as treats when I’d visit my grandparents.

My earliest fave memory is getting home and dunking chocolate Hostess Donettes in milk.

I never was a big fan of twinkies but love the chocolate cupcakes!
