Each year, thousands of school kids spend their summers at week-long camps designed to occupy their times and maybe even fine tune some academic skills. Even Percy Jackson gets to spend his summers learning how to be the perfect Half Blood. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a Home Camp, to whip out the perfect homeschooled student? I’m not talking about educational pursuits — we spend our days teaching our kids and for many, that never really ends. What I’m taking about is a camp focusing on how to be a functional student and member in the home.
May I present to you Home Camp — 8 Weeks To the Perfect Home Scholar:
WEEK 1 Ecosystems Of The Home
Every room is its unique ecosystem, comprising of elements that make it effective. Campers will spend the week getting up close and personal with these different areas and the “stuff” that live in them. By the end of this session, campers will know what a cleared floor looks like — and what doesn’t belong on it.
WEEK 2 Habitat Restoration — restoring the natural order of things.
Continuing in our study of ecosystems, Campers will learn the art of clearing horizontal surfaces — and keeping them that way. Special focus will be paid to the main culprits of clutter — toys, clothing, and books. “A place for everything and everything in its place!” will be the motto ingrained into every Camper’s head!
WEEK 3 Wet And Wild/Magic
Get ready for some soapy fun as we generate loads of bubbly suds and channel the magic of soap to clean any and every surface until they shine! Campers test their skills at the end of the day by tackling a mountain load of dirty laundry. Baking soda? Bleach? ECOS detergent? Learn the correct formula to defeat every monster. In no time at all, Campers will be able to convert the smelly beast into a heap of freshness!
WEEK 4 Weekend Warriors
Leaks, falling plaster, loose screws — no need to call an expert. After this week, campers will be able to handle all basic repairs and keep up with general household maintenance.
WEEK 5 Mastering Mom’s Machines
Vacuum cleaner, dishwasher, washer/dryer — this is it! Master all these and much, much more as we explore the mechanics that keep the household humming. Learn from a Professional Mom as she shows you how to:
- Increase sucking action by clipping hair and string from the vacuum roller
- Load the dishwasher to maximum capacity — each and every time!
- Become a master sorter of all towels, whites, colors, and delicates!
WEEK 6 Time Travelers
Getting ready for an outing can sometimes turn into a frantic missing-item search. Fine tune those packing skills so that you can be ready and out the door in less than 5 minutes! After this week, your parents can count on you to be ready to go — before the sun goes down.
WEEK 7 Home Survival — Cooking, the old fashioned way.
Campers will learn valuable survival skills as they learn to make a meal from scratch! Chop, dice, and slice your way to a hearty pot of vegetable soup, roast up a fabulous main course, and finish off with a decadent dessert.
WEEK 8 Eating Mindfully And Efficiently — finishing meals and getting on with your life.
This week, Campers will learn that breakfast and lunch don’t need to take two hours to complete. Chew, swallow, repeat!
All friends and family are invited at weeks’ end to sample the feast and celebrate the graduation of The Perfect Home Scholar!
Amida is currently the mom of three kids. When not fantasizing about the Perfect Home Scholar, she writes about their adventures on her blog Journey Into Unschooling.

Oh goody! This is my kinda camp! We did Camp Hodgepodge last summer and it was a big hit. It was just a week long though – with themed days. We’ll definitely be doing this. How funny. It’s all in how you spin it :)
Excellent camp idea! I bet this would actually work, especially if there were a “guest speaker.”
I know two sisters who would love it if I ran a camp like this lol! Great post!
Thanks everybody! I’m so glad I’m not alone in my little fantasy! It would be cool to make it reality, wouldn’t it? Summer is just a few weeks away…

Fabulous!
OK, I know this is a joke, but I’m seriously thinking of trying it. Ever since I found out I am pregnant with twins, things have been pretty bad around here!

We do this sort of thing right before we start back to school from a month long break in the summer, after summer camps and vacation. But, I love how you have poetically written up the descriptions. It sounds like fun to me!
You are a genius. Love it!
