In our last day of gifts, I want to share a project that my seven year old wanted to make for this Christmas. She had seen many felt projects in her favorite book Made By Me, and she was determined that she wanted to make a small decorative felt pillow.
Of course, the only thing holding her back was that she didn’t actually know how to sew. This is small beans to a seven year old girl, as you may know, if you also have a similarly aged girl. However, with some help from me and basic instruction on a running stitch, she easily created her decorative pillow (with much pride, I might add).
This project could be made into any shape, of course. The options with felt are endless. Molly decided on a heart shape, and then we also decided to put a small decorative heart on each side of the pillow as well. I helped with the cutting, and then gave some basic running stitch directions. I also had to stay close for each time she got it wrapped up in some odd way or just suddenly forgot what she needed to do.
When the pillow was almost sewn up, she used fiber fill to stuff her pillow. She then finished sewing her edges, and had a completed pillow to give to her Grandma for Christmas. (Although, it seems that she just couldn’t wait for Christmas to give away her creation. And, much to my surprise, even though she said it was for Grandma, I had actually been the intended receiver. What a special surprise!)
This was a great beginning sewing project that helped to inspire a lot of confidence (and pride). I can’t recommend it enough for your beginning sewer too.
