Why Should We Have Friends That Homeschool?

Although I know it is not necessary for every homeschooling family to have friends that homeschool, I think it can be a huge blessing! I know that we have been blessed over and over to be a part of a small faith-based homeschooling group, but also to be closer friends with some of the families.

There are many reasons that it can be beneficial to be friends with families that also homeschool, but one that comes to my mind right away was what we did with another family last week.

You see, as the school year is nearing its end, both my family and theirs is getting antsy. Both Moms felt the need to change things up a bit. So, on a whim (which, when you have nine kids between two families means about two days ahead of time), we planned a day long trip out of town to the closest Children’s Museum.

Not only did the kids have a great time, but my friend and I also had a good time. It was such a great way to spend a school day! And, I know that my kids had much more fun this time than the last time we went. I suspect that’s because it is often more fun to go somewhere with friends.

Are you friends with other families that homeschool? If you are, what do you think are some of the benefits of your friendship with them?

When Angie isn’t busy wandering around the children’s museum and constantly taking a head count on nine children, she can be found writing at Many Little Blessings.

  1. I love having friends that homeschool. It gives me a chance to bounce ideas off them and they give me new ideas and books to borrow. We try out new projects with our kids together. We get a chance to go on trips together. It is also nice being of like faith we encourage each other and share in volunteer work together.

  2. I started homeschooling in 2007. The following year – after a year in PS – my B & SIL started homeschooling their 2 children. It has been a blessing to us both (though we live in different cities) because we can share resources (I frequently give her things I no longer need) and we can get together more frequently than we used to in the past.
